There Will Always Be a Salesman Reviews:
Tolan McNeil is perhaps best known in these parts as one of Carolyn Mark's faithful sidemen. On There Will Always Be a Salesman, the guitarist steps out on his own, and the results are occasionally stunning. Wasting no time getting to the good stuff, McNeil launches the disc with "One Will Be Late", a loping shot of off-kilter, golden Americana that practically dares you not to sing along. Almost as memorable, "Oakland Shuffle" begins with a turn-of-the-century, Mississippi Delta field holler and then lights out for bluegrass heaven.Just when you think you've got a shoe-in for local roots record of the year, McNeil decides to fuck with the program... As a songwriter, he stands on par with Gordon Lightfoot on an ether binge. His wild guitar pickin' has been likened to riding a shopping cart down a steep gravelly hill and making it to the bottom in one piece. Live, he's as Country as a nitro-powered threshing machine, and as Rock as, well... a rock... a rock that's been thrown through a cop shop window. Put them together and you get a high octane concoction known in these parts as "Truck Rock". You can add it to the list of things that make Baby Jesus cry. - LiveVan.com
There’s smorgasbord of songs here on this CD by Carolyn Mark sideman Tolan McNeil but the tune I keep going back to is worth the price of product plus postage alone. You Should Probably Just Come With Me Now is the best song that Elvis Costello never wrote and it’s pop smarts hit you from the get go and never let up. It’s one of those songs that I want to listen to again while I’m still listening to it! Clearly just the tip of the iceberg (rather than McNeil’s only wad), this song might eventually relax its demands on my ear but I have comfort in the knowledge there’s more where it came from. There Will Always Be A Salesman is a hyper-ambitious work from the kind of weirdo your mother always warned you about. Take from that what you will. - NoDepression.com

We offer our MASSIVE thanks to Andrew, formerly of Red Cat, for ensuring we got our sweaty little hands on the happy sounds of this long-sought record. Thanks heaps, Dude! We love Tolan, here at the KMA, and what a treat this record is. Completely brilliant guitar work all over the place, whip-smart thoughtful and funny lyrics, and a wry wink and a smile that comes naturally. This is the stuff of dreams, of talent displayed boldly, of music that ought to be heard by everybody everywhere. This country-tinged truckrawk rules! - KeepsMeAlive.com
